Why an Audiophile Loves Airpods

I’ve always taken audio seriously. I record voice overs in a sound treated booth I personally assembled, with an XLR microphone, running through an extremely clean sounding preamp. I listen to much of my music through a high quality DAC housed within my $300 audio interface, plugged into a pair of Audio Technica ATH M20x’s. Perhaps a modest set up in the eyes of an elite audiophile, but indisputably more professional than most people’s listening equipment. So why then, you may be asking yourself, did I choose to opt for such an obviously inferior sounding listening set up with the Airpods? Many reviewers on this site have mentioned that they believe there to be no audible difference between the Airpods, and the stock EarPods costing a fifth of the price. Personally, I think the Airpods actually sound noticeably clearer than the EarPods, with particularly clear mids. I have always liked the sound produced by Apple’s Earpods, and simply think they’ve improved on it a bit with this product. Ultimately, these are not the most stellar of performers in the grand scheme of headphones, and I admit that when I am in an unusually loud environment, I found the sound they put out on their highest volume to be somewhat lackluster. However, that’s not to say they sound bad by any means. In fact I’ve found myself using them for hours at a time lately to casually listen to music while doing homework. I definitely wouldn’t choose the Airpods for audio editing, or any other type of work that requires accurate sound reproduction. However, I consider the sound they put out to be extremely pleasant, striking me as warm, balanced, and open. Sound isn’t the only factor that led me to these Airpods, and quite frankly, probably had the smallest impact in terms of my purchasing decision. What really led me to these headphones was their form factor, one which simply has altered the way I listen to music and watch videos in a way no other product has before.

I had AirPods since late December 2016 and it’s September 2017 now

I haven’t lost them yet

I wish the stem of the AirPods were slightly thinner and shorter and AirPods came in other colors

I also wish the AirPods case was more functional… maybe have music & volume controls there on the AirPod case

Do they blow out as easily as the EarPods that come with an iPhone

Eric! Do you think that the silicone guards would improve the sound quality when in loud environments?

Totally LOVE my AirPods after 2 months. Sound great, so easy to use, and stay perfectly in my ears. Also, the freedom to pair to my watch and go running/walking without my phone but with good sounds is amazing!
